NETWORK OF EXCELLENCE ON VIRTUAL REALITY AND VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS APPLICATIONS FOR FUTURE WORKSPACES
Description
CLARTE was partner of a consortium made up of the most prestigious search groups in virtual reality for all the Europe. This consortium included 267 researchers of 67 partners of 16 different countries.
37 institutes and universities of research were included. Among the European research groups most known on virtual reality, there were FHG (Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft), INRIA, CNRS, ICCS (Institute off Communication and Computer Systems), ECA, UNOTT (University off Nottingham) recognized in the World. These complementary groups in their competence represented the whole fields coverage by virtual reality about technologies, applications, human factors or normative.
The world of the Industry was also represented in this group, in particular by aeronautics (Alenia Spazio, Alenia Aeronautica, Astrium, Space applications), the automobile (CRF, Volvo, Renault), telecommunications (France Telecom, Italia telecom) and energy (Tecnatom). These industrial partners were at the same time represented by their research units already very implied in technologies related to virtual reality and by their production units which integrated already these new technologies.
Finally were also present in this consortium some PMEs (Ondim, Open Cascade, Realtime Technology) which brought their dynamism, their creativity and their expertise in the field. |

Systèmes de Conduite et d’Aide à la Navigation |
SCAN : project
At the example of Google Earth, more and more services complementary to the location called “hiring-aware” to assist the user are set up.
The project fits fully in this market evolution. The study is based on an interactive interface which enables the user to sail in a world 3D thanks to technologies of virtual reality.
The project does not claim to develop a complete tool of assistance to navigation, but proposes to measure by tests in real size the relevance of the use of the various techniques accessible from automatic rebuilding enriched by “mixed” reality, even "augmented".
SCAN : results
Bearing the data on the immersive tools of CLARTE
Bearings of the town of Laval and Paris were carried out by CLARTE in the SASCube and Reality Center. These tests made it possible to carry out the first tests of bearing of data and the development of the methods of navigation.
Bearing the applications on the workbench
During Laval Virtual 2009, CLARTE presented a rebuilding of the town of Laval on the WorkBench. The main aim was to present a semi-automatic modeling of the city to the residents of Laval in order to identify their degree of recognition. Via an interactive test associating an urban location in virtual environment and an imposed cognitive strategy, the user could discover the city in overflight, find typical buildings and judge the relevance of this method of modeling. This application was developed by CLARTE.
The aim of the application was to propose the first results of project SCAN and to improve the representation of the city like: - The addition of vertical elements such as urban furniture (fires, standard lamps, trees) - Navigation according to a height “Point of view/Ground” constant and thus profit from an oblique vision - A broader semantics texturale in order to allot an adequate texture to each building

During years 2001-2004, the work completed within the framework of a first national project of platform in virtual reality, project RNTL Perf-RV, showed the capacities of interactive and immersive virtual reality to study therealization of assembly/disassembling operations allowing to consider a reduction of the time of development, cost of industrialization of the products to be marketed, as well as maintenance and associated training costs.
The excellent results obtained during the first Perf-RV project justified the majority of the academic and industrial partners to continue with others the development of technologies of virtual reality in order to introduce into the virtual worlds the presence and the control of human virtual and to allow the study of human work in the factory of the future.
The Perf-RV2 platform aims at showing the contribution of virtual reality in the cycle of design of a product thanks to the introduction of human virtual. This human virtual, whose bases will be formalized in Perf-RV2, will indeed enable to validate the phases of manufacture, use and maintenance of a product as of the birth of its digital model. |
