Part@ge The man in collaborative interaction with an environment 3D

Part@ge : context

In the framework of the call to project 2006 of the RNTL,  Part@ge project was retained in the form of a platform project, after being allowed by the pole Images & Networks. This platform proposes to treat the groupware under the angle of the man in collaborative interaction with an environment 3D.
Carried by partners who combine the know-how or the possession of equipment or software tools requirements to the result of such a project, Part@ge project proposes works enable to analyze the topic of the collaborative interaction in virtual reality and raising scientific and technical bolts relating to the collaborative interaction.

Part@ge : CLARTE's contributions

CLARTE and the ISM-CRVM associated their competences  through a groupware on numerical model scale 1, each user in immersif space has a perception of the other collaborators present (but distant) in the scene, their actions and their intentions.

CLARTE designed the core real-time, based on architecture Virtools VRNR and its MultiUser pack, core which thus makes it possible several collaborators to work together, remotely, at the same time around a virtual model in a immersive space. It ensures coherence between the visions and actions on each site working together.

Concretely, the application is launched on each immersive system (see on the video: on SASCube or WorkBench, in Laval, and in the Visio-cube, in Marseille). Each application will be connected to a Virtools network via Internet, and will exchange data to ensure the coherence of the scenes and enable each user to see the actions of the distant person.

A tool for handling virtual objects and various metaphors of collaboration were developed. Today available on Virtools platforms, they integrate a common communication protocol established with the collaborators of the Part@ge project in order to, in the long term, enable to also make collaborate different type of platforms (OpenMask, Virtools, Spin3D).

The current application allows:

  • The dynamic creation of an avatar at the time of the connection of a collaborator.
  • Collision detection between objects, during handling in the scene
  • The displacement of the objects in the scene
  • The addition of relevant information to help with the comprehension of the distant actions.
  • Synchronization and coherence between two distant simulations

Part@ge : demonstration

Groupware in immersive and distant places

The innovating character of such application is of being able from now to enable distant  collaborators to visualize, modify, validate, in other words collaborate, around a numerical model at sessions of work in respective Immersif space. The diagrampresents a groupware between two sites.
